Kundli Milan: what the 36 gunas do and do not say

Guna Milan counts eight kutas out of 36 — all of them from the two Moons. Here is what each one weighs, what Nadi and Bhakoot mean, and why a score alone should not decide a marriage.

Guna Milan (Ashta Kuta) scores eight things out of 36. Every one of them is worked out from the Moon in each chart — its sign and its nakshatra — and nothing else.

Kuta Points What it weighs
Varna 1 Work and ego
Vashya 2 Mutual influence
Tara 3 Well-being for each other
Yoni 4 Physical compatibility
Graha Maitri 5 Friendship of the two Moon lords
Gana 6 Temperament
Bhakoot 7 Family and finances
Nadi 8 Health and children

What the number means

Below 18 is read as unsuitable, 18 to 24 as workable, 25 to 32 as good and 33 or more as excellent. But two of the kutas carry more than half the points between them, so a score can fall apart on one item: Nadi (8 points) is zero when both fall in the same nadi, and Bhakoot (7 points) is zero when the Moon signs stand in a 6–8 or 2–12 count from each other. A couple can lose 15 points and still be well matched in every other way.

What Milan does not see

It does not look at the two Lagnas, the 7th houses and their lords, the Navamsa (D9) charts, Manglik dosha, or the dashas each person is running when the marriage would take place. Those matter at least as much. Manglik is read separately — and it has its own cancellations, which a printed score never shows.

How to use it

Use the score as a first filter, not a verdict. Where the count is low, ask which kuta failed and whether the chart itself cancels it. Where it is high, still check the doshas and the timing.
