Numerology in India: Mulank, Bhagyank and the name number

Three numbers do most of the work — the day you were born, your whole date of birth, and the letters of your name. What each one is, and how far to trust them.

Indian numerology works with three numbers, and gives each one a planet.

Mulank (the root number) is the day of the month you were born, added down to a single digit: born on the 23rd, 2 + 3 = 5. It is read as your nature — how you meet the world.

Bhagyank (the destiny number) is the whole date of birth added down: 15-03-1985 becomes 1+5+0+3+1+9+8+5 = 32, then 3 + 2 = 5. It is read as the direction life keeps taking, whether or not you choose it.

Namank (the name number) is the letters of the name you are actually called by, in the Chaldean values, added down. When the name number quarrels with the Mulank and the Bhagyank, people change a spelling — one letter, not the name.

The planets behind the numbers

1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars. Numbers are friendly or not as their planets are, which is where "lucky" and "unlucky" numbers come from — and why they differ from person to person rather than being the same for everybody.

Mobile numbers, house numbers, vehicle numbers

The digits are added down to one, and that number's planet is compared with your own two. A number whose planet is an enemy of both is the one to avoid; most numbers are neither lucky nor unlucky.

How far to trust it

Numerology has three numbers; a birth chart has nine planets, twelve houses and a dasha system for timing. Where the two disagree, the chart is the fuller picture. Use numerology for small choices — a spelling, a number, a day — and the chart for the large ones.
