Mantras and prayers

Gayatri Mantra

The Vedic prayer to the light of the Sun, from the Rig Veda. The words, what they mean, and how it is traditionally recited.

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्॥

Om bhur bhuvah svah, tat savitur varenyam, bhargo devasya dhimahi, dhiyo yo nah prachodayat.

What it says

We meditate on the adorable light of the Sun, the giver of life, who dwells in the earth, the air and the heavens; may that light awaken our understanding. It is a prayer for clear thinking, not for any thing in particular. This is why it is given to students and recited at the start of study.

How it is recited

Traditionally at dawn, at midday and at dusk, facing east at dawn and west at dusk, in counts of 108 on a rudraksha or tulsi mala. Many recite it eleven times at sunrise and leave it there — the rule that matters more is steadiness than number.

Where it is used

It is the first remedy given for a weak Sun, for Grahan dosha, and for the mind before an examination. It belongs to no sect and no caste in practice today; anyone may recite it.
