Mantras and prayers

Shanti Path — the prayer for the good of all

Four lines recited at the close of prayer, asking for the happiness and health of everyone, not only one's own.

Om sarve bhavantu sukhinah, sarve santu niramayah, sarve bhadrani pashyantu, ma kashchid duhkha bhag bhavet. Om shantih shantih shantih.

What it says

May all be happy, may all be free from illness, may all see what is good, may no one come to suffering. Peace, peace, peace.

Where it is used

It closes a puja, a reading, a havan and many classes. The three "peace" are spoken for the three troubles — of the body, of the world around us, and of what is beyond our hands — which is why the word is said three times rather than once.

Nothing in it asks for anything for oneself. That is the point of it.
